Spring Valley Uses Hot Second Half To Surge Past Woodrow Wilson In Class AAAA Quarterfinals

The Spring Valley Timberwolves shot 19-of-25 in the second half as they raced past the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles, 61-44, on Wednesday in the Class AAAA quarterfinal round at the Charleston Civic Center.

Woodrow Wilson jumped out of the gate quickly and took an early 19-13 advantage. The lead grew slightly to 26-19 at the intermission.

In the third period, Spring Valley began to hit some easy shots in the paint to pass the Eagles and take a 40-35 lead into the final quarter. Woodrow Wilson cut the advantage to 44-41 with 6:22 left, but the Timberwolves closed out the game on a 17-3 run to take the run away win.

“I didn’t think we’d win by that many points, but I knew it would be a hard fought game,” said Spring Valley head coach Rick Chaffin. “Our kids like to get out and run. That’s been our thing all year. When they get running, they seem to perk up more. We don’t really play slow.”

Harrison Riggs led Spring Valley with 18 points. Clay Robertson and Colton Caldwell followed with 15 points each. Keyan Grayson recorded 8 points. Mason Williamson finished with 5 points.

Zyon Hawthorne led Woodrow Wilson with 16 points. Preston Clary had 12 points.

Spring Valley will next take on top seed Spring Mills in the Class AAAA semifinals on Friday at 11:15 am.
