The 10th ranked Wayne Pioneers got a signature win as they jumped out early and then put their foot down to roll past the visiting 7th ranked Winfield Generals, 89-70, on Friday night out Wayne. It was the first time Wayne had beaten Winfield in boys basketball.
The Pioneers (6-2) jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the opening quarter. Isaac Meddings jumped out to a hot start with 9 points, including a 4-point play and a 3-pointer as time was running down.
Wayne continued its onslaught in the second quarter, outscoring the Generals 30-13 to take full control of the game. Meddings continued his assault with 13 additional points to give him 22 at the half as the Pioneers held a 48-22 lead at the intermission.
“My teammates were hitting shots, and it opened up me a lot more,” said Wayne’s Isaac Meddings. “I just knocked them down. It was a good night for us. I’m just proud of my teammates for getting me open and doing good things tonight.”
Winfield (3-3) settled down a bit in the second half, but Wayne was never threatened the second half, taking a 69-46 lead into the final period and maintaining a lead of over 20 points until the final minute of the game.
“I thought it was a great team win,” said Wayne head coach Sean Meddings. “We were firing on all cylinders. We’ve been shooting the ball great all season long. We had the Christmas break, and I was afraid that we could come out a little slow, but we kept it going.”
Meddings finished with a game-high 42 points. Ronnie Staley followed with 13 points. Landon Preece scored 8 points. Colton Heck and Colton Preece added 7 points apiece. Cooper Adkins and Peyton Marcum finished with 6 points each.
Reid Fisher paced Winfield with 22 points. Tyler Peros followed with 16 points. Mydan Oglesby had 14 points in the loss.
Wayne is next scheduled to play at Ripley on Tuesday.
