The Tug Valley Panthers held off a furious rally to come away with a 71-63 win over Calvary Baptist on Friday in the Kaydence Maynard Memorial Classic on Friday at Tug Valley High School in Naugatuck.
The Panthers (4-0) jumped out of the gate quickly and took a 21-14 lead after the first period. The advantage grew to 43-28 at the intermission, and Tug Valley seemed to be in full control.
The Tug Valley lead grew to 19 points before Calvary Baptist (7-1) mounted a huge comeback. Calvary Baptist outscored Tug Valley 23-15 in the third period to make the score 58-51 heading into the final frame. Then, Calvary Baptist clawed within a point at 60-59, but a few defensive stops and clutch free throws down the stretch sealed the Panthers’ win.
Braydun Ferris led Tug Valley with 20 points. Carson Newsome followed with 17 points. Kaden Hale added 11 points and 5 rebounds. Ashton Davis scored 9 points and had 2 blocks. Bryson Elia had 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Ethan Ferrell netted 7 points.
Bryson Childers lead Calvary Baptist with 24 points. Caleb Skeens fired in 19 points.
Tug Valley will be in action on Saturday by hosting Phelps in the Kaydence Maynard Memorial Classic at Tug Valley High School.
