The Raceland Rams have finished as runners up two years in a row. The first two times, Raceland fell to Pikeville. This time around, the opponent has changed, but the goal remains the same as the Rams look to capture a state title against the Sayre Spartans on Friday at Kroger Field in Lexington.
The Rams (10-4), coached by Michael Salmons, are coming into the championship game after beating Kentucky Country Day in the semifinals, 14-0.
Jacob Waller will run the offense for Raceland. So far this season, Waller has completed 122-of-172 passes for 1,399 yards, 11 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He also has 3 rushing touchdowns.
Shannon Marushi leads the balanced Rams rushing attack that has accounted for 2,702 yards and 47 touchdowns. Marushi has 119 carries for 574 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Jonah Arnett leads the receivers with 38 catches for 444 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Sayre (14-0), coached by Marshall legend and former NFL quarterback Chad Pennington, comes into the championship game after beating Campbellsville 35-14 last week.
The Spartans are led by the coach’s son at quarterback Luke Pennington. So far this season, he has completed 190-of-254 passes for 2,720 yards, 50 touchdowns and 3 interceptions to go along win 5 rushing touchdowns.
Brock Coffman is the top receiver on the Sayre squad with 89 receptions for 1,387 yards and 24 touchdowns.
