The Belfry Pirates continued their push for a state championship as they turned away a game Rockcastle County squad to pick up a 21-13 win on Friday night at Haywood Stadium.
The Pirates (10-2) got the scoring started when JB Woolum found the end zone on a 25-yard run with 3:36 left in the first quarter. Nick Savage’s PAT kick made the score 7-0.
Rockcastle County (10-2) answered with just 30.5 seconds left in the half when Caden Lovell’s 2-yard touchdown run knotted the score at 7-7 at the intermission.
The Pirates responded with 9:51 left in the third period when JJ Austin raced into the end zone from 31 yards out and a 13-7 lead. Quarterback Chase Varney scored on a 29-yard run. Austin then added a conversion run to make it 21-7 heading into the final quarter.
Rockcastle County would score on an Isaiah Jackson 2-yard touchdown run late, but it wasn’t enough as the Pirates won and advanced.
For the Pirates, Chase Varney completed 2-of-5 passes for 26 yards while also adding 11 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.
JJ Austin had 19 carries for 171 yards and 1 touchdown. JB Woolum had 46 yards and 1 touchdown on 7 carries. Ace Caudill carried the ball 4 times for 6 yards.
Belfry moves on to the quarterfinals and a match up with the Russell Red Devils (9-3) on Friday at Haywood Stadium.
