Two Classification Proposals Pass At WVSSAC Meeting

A couple of proposals passed that could alter the landscape of West Virginia high school sports on Thursday at the WVSSAC Board of Control Meeting.

The proposal is for all sports with four classes and calls for Class AAAA to consist of schools with a modified enrollment of 900-plus, Class AAA to consist of schools with a modified enrollment of 500-899, Class AA to consist of schools with a modified enrollment of 250-499 and Class A to consist of schools with a modified enrollment of 249 and below. Each student who is eligible for a free or reduced lunch will count as half a student instead of one student in this proposal. This would go into effect for the 2025-26 school year.

In the D&D Sports Network coverage area, Spring Valley will remain the only team in Class AAA. Chapmanville, Wayne, Mingo Central, Westside, Scott and Logan will all be in Class AA. Man, Tug Valley, Tolsia and Huntington St Joe will all be in Class A.

The second proposal is to reclassify schools every two years instead of every four years. This should help with keeping up with the state’s ever shifting population.

Both proposals passed by the Board of Control have to be approved by the state board of education, which puts them up for public comment. The next step would then be a review from the Secretary of State Office for a 60-day window, before going into effect.
