The Belfry Pirates got a huge road win on Friday night as they defeated the Southwestern Warriors, 47-26 to even up their record at 2-2.
The Pirates came out hot, scoring the first 19 points of the game, all in the opening quarter. First, JB Woolum busted into the end zone from 29 yards out. Nick Savage’s PAT kick made it 7-0. Chase Varney then hit Cayden Varney on a 36-yard touchdown reception after a turnover to make the score 13-0. Belfry’s final points of the quarter came on a 47-yard touchdown run from Woolum for the 19-0 lead.
Southwestern cut the lead to 19-7 early in the second quarter, but then Woolum broke free on a 71-yard touchdown jaunt to make the score 26-7. The Warriors scored one more time near the end of the half, leaving the Pirates with a 26-13 lead at the intermission.
Belfry took complete control of the game in the third period as JJ Austin scored on a 27-yard touchdown run. Chase Varney then connected with Woolum on a 72-yard scoring strike. Southwestern then scored near the end of the quarter to make it a 40-19 game.
Austin added 6-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Southwestern scored one more time as the Pirates got the big win.
Chase Varney completed 8-of-14 passes for 143 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Woolum paced the Pirates’ ground attack with 7 carries for 157 yards and 3 touchdowns. Austin had 19 carries for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ace Caudill had 46 yards rushing. Hunter Hylton added 17 yards on the ground. Dante Davis picked up 5 yards.
Woolum led Belfry’s receivers with 74 yards and 1 touchdown on 2 catches. Cayden Varney had 3 receptions for 39 yards and 1 touchdown. Caudill finished with 20 yards on 3 catches.
Belfry will next travel to Pikeville for a showdown with the Panthers on Friday in one of the most anticipated match ups in the Mountains.
