Belfry Rolls Past Breathitt County In Season Opener

The Belfry Pirates celebrated 100 years of football as they pounded the visiting Breathitt County Bobcats, 56-26, on Friday at Haywood Stadium.

The Pirates jumped on the scoreboard first when Chase Varney broke free on a 54-yard scamper. Nick Savage’s PAT kick made it 7-0 for Belfry with 9:44 left in the opening quarter.

Breathitt County responded with a 9-yard run from Jayden Gibson to cut the lead to 7-6 with 4:35 left in the first period.

Belfry responded just 1:20 later when Hunter Hylton found the end zone from 6 yards out to extend the lead to 14-6.

It took the Bobcats just a little over a minute to respond when Miles Hollon connected with Eli Thomas on a 24-yard scoring strike.

The Pirates’ Ace Caudill scored with just 0:14 left in the opening frame on a 34-yard run to make the score 21-12 after the first quarter.

Breathitt County made it a 21-18 game midway through the second quarter when Miles Hollon threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to John Hollon, but it would be all Belfry from there.

Caudill found the end zone again, this time from 46 yards out. JJ Austin scored on a 28-yard run. Chase Varney then connected with JB Woolum to give the Pirates a 42-18 lead at the intermission.

Belfry continued its onslaught in the third period when Austin scored on 7-yard run. Dante Davis added a 3-yard run to make the score 56-18.

Breathitt County scored the final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a Brayden Barnett run. Barnett also added the 2-point conversion.

Chase Varney completed 5-of-10 passes for 90 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 60 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.

Caudill led the Belfry ground game with 110 yards and 2 touchdowns while catching 2 passes for 46 yards. Austin had 58 yards and 2 touchdowns. Woolum finished with 47 yards rushing and 32 yards receiving with a touchdown. Davis had 24 yards rushing with 1 touchdown. Hylton had 19 yards and 1 touchdown. Cayden Varney had a 12-yard reception.

The Pirates will next play on Friday when they host George Rogers Clark in the Pike County Bowl at 8:30 pm. Breathitt County will host Perry County Central on Friday at 7:30 pm.
