On Tuesday, the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission announced that 11 schools would be reclassified just as teams are set to begin the regular season.
The move is an early blow to the four-class system for football as this is the first season that the WVSSAC has used this model for football and other sports. A different but similar model has been used for basketball the past few seasons.
The 11 schools changing classes all had their appeals upheld by the seven members of the Review Board appointed by the WVSSAC.
Those schools are:
Class AAAA to AAA
John Marshall
Oak Hill
Preston
St. Albans
Spring Valley
Class AAA to AA
Frankfort
Sissonville
Wayne
Class AA to A
Petersburg
St. Marys
Tyler Consolidated
With the move, only 20 teams remain in Class AAAA for football. That means only four teams would be left out of the playoffs in the current format. This announcement changes up the landscape of West Virginia High School football in all four classes.
The West Virginia High School regular season begins on August 29th.
