Dasia Thornton is a winner. Having been a part of a national championship team and earning numerous accolades during her collegiate career, Thornton is now looking to help the OPB Swish have a fantastic first season in the Women’s American Basketball Association.
Thornton was a stand out at Transylvania University in Lexington. She helped lead the team to the 2023 Division III National Championship and a perfect 33-0 record in 2022-23. She then helped her team to a 31-1 record in the 2023-24 season, coming up just short of a second straight championship. Along the way, she also earned All-American honors.
“Playing at Transy and winning a national championship was one of the most memorable experiences of my life,” said Thornton. “Just the whole thing was great to be a part of. We tried to do it back-to-back, but it didn’t happen the way we wanted.”
Thornton graduated with a degree in International Relations and a minor in Spanish. She then heard about the Swish from former college teammate and fellow Swish player Kennedi Stacy. Stacy, a Magoffin County High School graduate, put Thornton in touch with Carla Booth. The next thing you know, Thornton was on board.
The Swish started off the WABA season strong with a win over Atlanta. Thornton said that the team came together pretty quickly.
“We didn’t know what to expect heading into the game,” she said. “But we know that we can improve. We have a tough game on Saturday, and this is a tough league. We have some really big expectations for this game.”
The Swish will take on the Raleigh Aces at Martin County High School on Saturday at 6 pm. Thornton is hoping for a big turn out.
“Everyone, come out and pack the gym,” she said. “You’ll see a show. We’re excited to play in front of you.”
With talent like Thornton on the squad, the sky is the limit for the OPB Swish.
