Goad’s Homer Lifts Boyd County To Dramatic Win In Softball State Tournament

Jaycie Goad smashed a two-run homer to center field in the top of the 7th inning to lift the Boyd County Lady Lions to a 2-1 win over Mercy Academy in the opening round of the KHSAA State Softball Tournament on Thursday at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th inning when Mercy Academy (21-14) scratched a run across for a 1-0 lead.

Things looked bleak for the Lady Lions (23-17), needing to score in their last at bat. But Savanna Henderson led off the top of the 7th inning with a walk. Jaycie Goad then stepped up and crushed the ball over the wall in center field to give Boyd County a 2-1 lead.

Mercy Academy would threaten to score in the bottom of the 7th inning, but Elyn Simpkins struck out Karley Szabo to end the game.

For Boyd County, Kyli Kouns added a double. Jadyn Goad and Elise Sparks added a single apiece in the win.

The Lady Lions will next play North Laurel on Saturday. The opening pitch is set for 1 pm at John Cropp Stadium.
