It took a lifetime to get there, but the Magoffin County Hornets (22-13) picked up a hard fought win over the Perry County Central Commodores (21-13) by a score of 54-47 on Wednesday at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
For the Hornets, it was their program’s first win on the Bluegrass’ biggest stage.
After the two teams were tied 13-13 after the opening period, the Commodores raced ahead and carried a 25-19 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Hornets cut into the lead in the third period and trailed, 38-35, heading into the final frame. Magoffin County then outscored Perry County Central, 19-9, in the fourth quarter to take the win.
Aden Barnett led the Hornets with 24 points. Walker Russell followed with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Zane Whitaker scored 10 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Ethan Salyer finished with 3 points.
Carter Castle and Trayten Woods paced the Commodores with 14 points each. Kizer Slone scored 9 points and pulled down 11 boards. Tyson Neace added 7 points. Mason Sumner chipped in with 3 points.
The Hornets will play in the quarterfinal round on Friday against the winner of Spencer County and Great Crossing at 11 am.
