On Monday night, the Perry County Central Commodores will face Breathitt County in the 14th Region Championship at Powell County High School. It’s a moment that seemed like it may not happen a short time ago.
The Commodores faced a lot of adversity this season, and the team embraced that uphill battle. Head coach Shannon Hoskins has arguably done a better job of preparing his team for the postseason than anyone.
In the semifinal round on Saturday, the Commodores beat a Knott County Central squad that many thought would win the region, 59-54.
Kizer Slone led the way in that game, scoring 19 points and pulling down 5 rebounds. Carter Castle followed with 15 points and 3 rebounds. Trayten Woods had 12 points and 4 rebounds. Tyson Neace scored 8 points and pulled down 5 boards. Mason Sumner added 3 points and 2 rebounds. Landon Miller chipped in with 2 points in the huge win.
Currently, the Commodores are 21-13 and are on the cusp of a regional championship and trip to Rupp Arena. On Monday, they’ll face Breathitt County in a rematch of last year’s 14th Region Championship. Perry County Central lost a year ago, but much has changed in a year. The Commodores have had to scratch and claw all season and now head into the game as a galvanized unit. It will be anyone’s game.
The opening tip is set for 7 pm.
