Martin County’s Laken Williams Wins Donna LJ Murphy Award

Martin County senior star Laken Williams has been named the recipient for the prestigious Donna LJ Murphy Award for 2024.

The Donna LJ Murphy Award is given to a Kentucky female high school senior basketball student-athlete, who exemplifies the essence of “student-athlete”.

The award is based on proven academic credentials and being college bound, outstanding athletic ability, character traits of integrity, commitment, strong work ethic and positive attitude, respect of self and others, servant leadership, overcoming adversity and being a class act on and off the court.

Williams has scored more than 2,000 points and dished out over 500 assists in her career while maintaining a 3.96 GPA. She was recently offered a basketball scholarship by Morehead State University and holds many career awards.

Williams has been named to the 15th Region Coaches Association All Region Team three times. She has also led the Lady Cardinals to two 57th District Championships and captured all-tournament team and MVP honors for many tournaments.

Off the court, Williams is a member of the BETA Club and Travel Club. She also participates in the JAG Program, is on the Yearbook team and has been a part of numerous community service projects through her Church and the Martin County Hoops League.

Currently, Williams is averaging 19.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game for the 17-9 Lady Cardinals.

Congratulations to Laken for excelling both on and off the court. This award is well-deserved.
