Freshman Tyler Weddington had a double-double as the Phelps Horners (10-7) picked up a 72-60 win over the visiting Man Hillbillies (4-8) on Wednesday at McCoy Athletic Complex in Phelps.
Both teams came out with a break neck pace as the Hillbillies held a 17-15 advantage after the first period. The Hornets took control in the second quarter as Weddington started to take over under the basket. Phelps took a 40-27 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Hornets continued to turn up the heat in the third period, outscoring Man 16-9 in the quarter to take a 56-36 lead into the final period. Phelps maintained the advantage for most of the period with the Hillbillies cutting into the lead late in the game, but the Hornets were able to celebrate the double digit victory.
Weddington led the way with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Nick Knox fired in 10 points. Reece Norman netted 9 points. Gabe Adkins fired in 8 points. Dylan Fields scored 7 points. Ethan Fields recorded 6 points. Gavin Hamilton and Brandon Howard netted 4 points each. John Socorin fired in 3 points. Ethan Wolford Chipped in 2 points.
For Man, Jake Endicott had 12 points. Trey Ward and Devon Sanders fired in 10 points each. Justin Mullins followed with 8 points. Noah Frazier added 7 points. Landon Cantrell dropped in 5 points. Blake Hicks and Micah Goble scored 3 points each. Conner Whit finished with 2 points.
Phelps will next play on Saturday at 7:30 pm at Jackson City in the Kentucky Prep Showcase. Man is scheduled to play on Thursday at Liberty-Raleigh. The opening tip is 7:30 pm.
