After closing out 2023 with two consecutive losses, the Russell Red Devils and coach Mandy Layne were looking to get 2024 started off in the win column. They welcomed the Montgomery County Lady Indians to town. The Lady Indians had closed out 2023 with two consecutive wins. However, the new year wouldn’t start the same way 2023 had ended for the Lady Indians. Russell would prove to be too much and would get the 61-44 win.
The Lady Indians would give it everything they had. Allie Dillon finished with a team-high 14 points. Hayden Barrier finished with 12 points. Baylee Warner had 9 points. Reaghan Oney had 4 points. Shaelynn Harris and Sophie Fouch each had 2 points and Raegan Mays had 1 point in the loss.
The Red Devils were led in scoring by Shaelyn Steele with 21 points and she also had 4 rebounds. Kennedy Darnell finished with 18 points and a game-high 7 rebounds. Darnell was 2 for 2 from the free throw line and Steele was 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Hannah Sanders had 7 points. Bella Quinn had 6 points. Courtney Fitzpatrick added 4 points. Bethany Allen had 3 points. Gabby Oborne chipped in 2 points in the victory. The Red Devils shot 48.9% from the field, including 43.5% from beyond the arc. Russell improves to 9-3 on the season and are 5-0 in region play.
The Red Devils return to action at home against Lewis County on Jan. 5th for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
