The Chapmanville Regional Lady Tigers go into tonight’s home opener against Logan with a 1-1 record to start their 2023-24 campaign.
In their opening game at Herbert Hoover, the Lady Tigers came away with a 60-32 victory over the Huskies. “We are happy to open up the season with a win and pleased to see a big shift in our defensive culture,” Head Coach Kristina Gore said after the game against Hoover. “I was happy to see the way we shared the basketball and ran the floor,” Gore stated. “Also happy for Haley (Fleming) and Brooke (Christian) for both having career highs in assists in this game.”
In the game against Herbert Hoover, senior Jaiden Mahon led the way with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and 1 assist. Jaycee Blair also finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
In the following game against Lewis County, the Tigers struggled from behind the arc and fell to the Minutemen 69-51. “I told our team in the locker room after the game, that we would look back on this loss later in the year and be thankful for it,” Coach Gore said. “The final score was not indicative of how competitive that game truly was. There were three glaring issues that led to an 18-point loss. To begin with, we shot 18% from behind the arc, and they shot close to 40%.”
Jaiden Mahon again led the way for the Lady Tigers with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Haley Fleming finished with 13 points and 3 assists.
Tonight, the Lady Tigers have their home opener against county rival Logan. The big news for the Lady Tigers is that All-Stater Alaria Evans will suit up for the first time this season after dealing with an ankle injury for the last month.
Game time tonight is 7:00 between the Lady Wildcats and Lady Tigers at Danny Godby Gymnasium in Chapmanville, WV.
