University Of Charleston Wins First Football Playoff Game Ever

Chavon Wright scored 6 touchdowns as the University of Charleston Golden Eagles jumped out early and then held off a furious rally to beat the New Haven Chargers, 52-44, on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II playoffs at University of Charleston Stadium.

The Golden Eagles (10-1) jumped on top early, scoring the game’s first 24 points, including three touchdown rushes from Wright. New Haven (8-3) got on the board in the final minute of the half as Daelen Menard threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dev Holmes.

Charleston got two more touchdowns from Wright and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Tae Marrero.

Wright scored his last touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Charleston held off a late rally to win the first playoff game in program history.

Wright carried the ball 34 times for 163 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Javonte Howard completed 14-of-22 passes for 246 yards and 1 interception. Marrero had 5 catches for 114 yards.

For New Haven, Menard completed 20-of-34 passes for 278 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Charleston will stay at home for the second round of the playoffs and host PSAC Champion Kutztown (10-2) on Saturday.
