Thelwell Leads Eagles To Win Over Bears

The Eagles were looking to get back to .500 on the season. It was close throughout. Neither team led by more than 12 at any point in the game.

Mercer would build its largest lead at 8-4 at the 17:16 mark in the first half on a Jalyn McCreary jumper.

The Eagles would respond with a 7-0 run capped off with a Jordan Lathon layup that put the Eagles in front 11-8. The Bears would tie the game at 11-11 with a Jalen Cobb three.

With the game tied at 24-24, the Eagles would outscore the Bears 14-6 over the final 6 minutes of the first half to take a 38-30 lead into halftime.

The Bears would come out in the 2nd half and go on an 8-1 run to pull the game to 38-39 in favor of the Eagles. The Bears wouldn’t get any closer than that.

Eddie Ricks III hit a three to start a 10-2 run by the Eagles. Drew Thelwell would cap off the run with a three to give the Eagles a 49-40 lead.

A layup by Jah Quinones would cut the lead to 49-45. With the Bears fighting back, Drew Thelwell would make a layup, get fouled and completed the three-point play. Jordan Lathon would hit a three to push the Eagles lead to 55-45.

With 4:44 remaining, Riley Minix would hit a jumper to give the Eagles their largest lead at 68-56.

The closest Mercer would get would be 6 points. Riley Minix would hit two free throws to put the Eagles in front 74-66 and that would be the final score.

Drew Thelwell and Riley Minix would be the only Eagles to score in double figures. Thelwell finished with 26 points, 1 steal, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Thelwell was 8 of 13 from the field, 4 of 8 from three, and 6 of 7 from the free throw line. Minix finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Minix was 12 of 12 from the free throw line, 3 of 6 from the field, and 1 of 2 from three.

Dieonte Miles finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds for the Eagles. Jordan Lathon added 7 points and 5 rebounds. Eddie Ricks III finished with 6 points. Jerone Morton and Trent Scott finished with 4 points each.

Morehead (2-2) travels to Pennsylvania this coming Friday, Nov. 17th to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0). Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
