Skyhawks Get Revenge Over Nitro To Advance In Playoffs

The 4th seed (Class AA) Scott Skyhawks got a measure of revenge on Saturday as they defeated the 13th seed Nitro Wildcats, 27-0, in first round of the playoffs in West Madison.

Nitro (7-4) beat Scott, 28-24, in a contest that propelled the Wildcats into the playoffs and dropped Scott down to the 4th seed.

The Skyhawks (10-1) got on the scoreboard in the first quarter when Preston Cooper scored on a 2-yard run. Tucker Breedlove’s PAT kick made the score 7-0.

Scott added two scores in the second period. First Matt Frye completed a 16-yard pass to Jax McCarty to make it a 14-0 lead. Near the end of the half, Frye and McCarty hooked up again on a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it a 20-0 advantage at the intermission.

The score remained the same until the fourth period when Frye found Carter McClung from 9 yards out for a touchdown to make it 27-0.

For the Skyhawks, Frye completed 7-of-17 passes for 57 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Cooper led the ground game with 30 carries for 149 yards and 1 touchdown. Carson Brinegar had 3 carries for 62 yards. Caden Sutphin had 4 attempts for 29 yards.

McCarty led all Skyhawk receivers with 2 catches for 31 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cooper had 3 receptions for 17 yards. McClung caught 1 pass for 9 yards and 1 touchdown.

Scott will next host Weir on Saturday at 1:30 pm in the second round of the playoffs.
