West Virginia Playoff Preview: Pioneers Try To Take Down Polar Bears

The 15th seed (Class AA) Wayne Pioneers enter the playoffs with the tall task of traveling up north to take on the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears on Friday.

The Pioneers (6-4) enter the game after winning four in a row. Fisher Fry will lead the team under center. Fry has completed 88-of-147 passes for 1,279 yards, 13 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Fry also has 74 carries for 318 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Colton Mathis leads Wayne on the ground with 742 yards and 14 touchdowns on 92 carries. Jaxson Damron had 106 carries for 703 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Ronnie Staley is the team’s leading receiver with 25 catches for 397 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Fairmont Senior (7-2) has played one of the strongest schedules in the state and comes into the playoffs as one of the favorites to win the state title.

The Polar Bears have a great quarterback in Brody Whitehair. Last week against East Fairmont, Whitehair completed 12-of-20 passes for 196 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also had 69 yards and 1 touchdown on 8 carries.

Wayne has been a very good team all season, and they will have to play their best game to beat Fairmont Senior. The opening kick is set for 7:30 pm on Friday in Fairmont.
