Pirates Pound Clay County In Opening Round Tournament Game

The Belfry Pirates opened their playoff run by scoring 56 points in the first half on the way to a 56-36 win over Clay County on Friday at Haywood Stadium.

The Pirates (8-3) got a good game from quarterback Chase Varney. Varney completed 6-of-8 passes for 159 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Caden Woolum caught 5 passes for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown. Eli Caudill caught 1 pass for 23 yards and 1 touchdown.

Dre Young led the Pirate ground game with 128 yards and 2 touchdowns on 7 carries. JJ Austin had 2 carries for 53 yards and 1 touchdown. JB Woolum had 1 carry for 25 yards. Ace Caudill had 2 carries for 14 yards and 1 touchdown in the win.

Belfry will now play powerful Bell County (10-1) who defeated Magoffin County, 62-27, in the opening round.

The opening kick is set for Friday at 7:30 pm at Haywood Stadium.
