Lions Overcome Bulldogs With Late Pick Six

The Lawrence County Bulldogs had won 2 straight games, 5 of their last 6, and had won three straight over Boyd County. Boyd County came to the Dawg Pound looking for revenge and looking for a 2nd straight victory this season. Fresh off a blowout win over Rowan County, the Lions of Boyd County were looking to take another game on the road.

Boyd County would strike first when Rhett Holbrook would run it in from the 9-yard line for the first touchdown of the game. After a successful PAT, the Lions would lead 7-0.

The Bulldogs first drive would stall, and they would give the ball back to Boyd County on a turnover on downs. The Bulldogs would force the Lions to a three-and-out, and would get the ball back.

The Bulldogs would begin their second drive of the game with a pitch play, however, the pitch was off and the ball rolled back into the end zone where Cody Crum would recover, however, he would immediately be tackled for a safety. The Lions would jump ahead 9-0.

The Bulldogs would get the ball back, this time forcing the Lions into a turnover on downs. This time the Bulldogs offense would not be denied. The Bulldogs would march 75-yards down the field, and Talan Pollock would run in a 1-yard touchdown to bring the score to 9-7.

The score would remain 9-7 until the 4th quarter. Cavin Williams would punch it in from 2-yards out to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 14-9.

Cole Hicks would emerge as the hero for Boyd County. Trailing 14-9, the Lions would put together a drive that would end with Pollock connecting with Cole Hicks for a 32-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion would fail; however, the Lions were up 15-14.

With Lawrence County trailing 15-14 in the 4th quarter. The Bulldogs had the ball and was driving. With the ball at the Boyd County 34-yard line, Bulldogs QB, Talan Pollock dropped back to pass. Cole Hicks would pick it off and return it 66 yards to ultimately put the Lions ahead 22-14.

Lawrence County would have 1:21 left in the game to try to drive down and tie the game. However, the Bulldogs would only run 1 play. Pollock would once again drop back to pass, and once again, Cole Hicks was there for his second interception of the game, this one would seal the win for the Lions.

Bulldogs’ QB, Talan Pollock would have a tough night. Pollock completed 9 of 17 passes for 101 yards, 0 TDs and 3 INTs. Pollock would carry the ball 9 times for 58 yards and 1 rushing touchdown. Caven Williams would have 3 carries and 1 rushing touchdown. Cody Crum had 17 carries for 63 yards.

Boyd County QB, Rhett Holbrook would complete 10 of 13 passes for 182 yards and 1 touchdown. Holbrook would also have 17 carries for 37 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown. Camaron Collins had 11 rushes for 54 yards. Hicks finished with 2 receptions for 32 yards and 1 touchdown reception, while also recording two interceptions including a pick-six.

Lawrence County (6-3) will be back in action this Friday, Oct. 27th when they host Mason County (6-3). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Boyd County (5-4) will host Pikeville (6-2) this coming Friday, Oct. 27th. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
