The Belfry Pirates jumped all over the Powell County Pirates early and never looked back as they breezed to a 54-15 win on Friday.
Belfry (6-3) jumped on the scoreboard with 8:21 left in the first quarter when Dre Young scored on a 2-yard run. Nick Savage’s PAT kick made it 7-0. Later in the Chase Varney connected with Caden Woolum on a 9-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0. Near the end of the opening quarter Young scored on a 1-yard plunge to make it 20-0.
The second quarter didn’t get much better for Powell County. Belfry went ahead 27-0 after a 42-yard run early in the quarter.
Powell County made the score 27-7 with 4:02 left in half on a 2-yard Jacob Green touchdown run.
Belfry then extended the lead on a 1-yard Ace Caudill run. The lead grew to 40-7 on Varney’s 15-yard toucdown pass to Keaton Deskins.
The lead kept growing in the third period. First, Hunter Hylton scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Then, Eli Caudill scored on an 8-yard run.
Green scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it a 54-15 final score.
Young led Belfry with 150 yards and 3 touchdowns on 7 carries. Hylton, Ace Caudill and Eli Caudill all scored touchdowns for Belfry.
Varney completed 6-of-7 passes for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns. Eli Caudill was Belfry’s leading receiver with 3 catches for 88 yards.
Belfry will next play on Friday at Letcher County Central. The opening kick is set for 7:30 pm.
