Friday Night Football Preview: Comets Travel To Lewis County To Face The Lions

Written By: JMF

In a matchup of two teams that both are 2-6 this season, one team looks to gain momentum heading toward the playoffs. Both the Lions of Lewis County and the Comets of West Carter have struggled this season. The Lions have lost 3 straight games, while the Comets are coming off their worst loss of the season.

The Comets had been in every game they had played this season and had a chance to win every game. However, last week, the Comets got completely dismantled by the Panthers of Fleming County. The Comets are looking to bounce back this week. The Comets come into this game averaging 24 points per game while allowing 22.5 points per game.

The Comets offense is led by Dwaylon Dean. Dean has 176 carries this season and has netted 1,194 rushing yards and has 18 rushing touchdowns. Dean is averaging 149.2 yards per game rushing. Dean will be looking to shake off last week’s performance that seen him only get 81 yards rushing and was held out of the endzone.

Hayden Hall has completed 52 of 122 passes for 828 yards and 5 touchdowns. Hall has thrown 8 interceptions this season. Kadin Thompson has 14 receptions for 276 yards and 1 TD. Isaiah Bond has 12 receptions for 228 yards and 2 TDs. Kale Back has 19 receptions for 213 yards and 2 TDs. Dwaylon Dean also has a touchdown reception this season.

Since a 50-8 win over Bath County, Lewis County has dropped 3 straight games. The Lions are only averaging 18.4 points per game this season and are giving up 32.6 points per game. Since scoring the 50 points against Bath County, the Lions are only averaging 6.7 points in their last three games, while allowing an average of 38.7 points in those three games.

Lions’ QB, Ayden Cooper has completed 91 of 203 passes for 1,037 yards and 8 TDs this season. Cooper has also thrown 6 INTs this season. In addition, Cooper has 3 rushing touchdowns this season.

Cooper’s favorite target in the passing game is Julian Puente. Puente has 55 receptions for 601 yards and 5 touchdown receptions this season. Braedyn McGlone, Jaidance Cottingham, Alex Russell, and Noah Johnson all have 1 touchdown reception each.

Braedyn McGlone leads the Lions’ rushing attack. McGlone has 420 yards rushing and 6 rushing touchdowns this season. McGlone is also a former D and D Sports player of the week this season. Alex Russell has 36 carries for 249 yards and 3 TDs.

The Lions’ defense must put forth a solid effort this week if they want to overcome and defeat the Comets. The Comets’ defense has been solid all season except for the Fleming County game.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m in Lewis County.
