In a game featuring two high-powered offenses, it turned into a defensive battle. Both Fleming County and East Carter were coming off games in which they each score 40 or more points the previous week. East Carter entered the game averaging 33.3 points per game. Fleming County entered the game averaging 31.2 points per game. However, in this game the two teams combined would put up a total of 34 points.
It was a battle. With both teams wanting victory. In the end, the Raiders of East Carter would overcome and prevail against the Panthers of Fleming County by a score of 19-15.
In a game that seen the Panthers’ QB, Nate Martin struggle, completing 6 of 10 passes for 56 yards, 2 of those incomplete passes were interceptions. Austin Trent would not put up his normal numbers either. Trent would carry the ball 10 times for 41 yards and no scores.
However, Landon Johnson would turn on beast mode and carry the ball 11 times for 184 yards and 2 TDs. Johnson would also have 3 receptions for 35 yards.
The Panthers’ offense would total 56 yards in passing and 215 yards rushing. However, three turnovers would hurt the Panthers’ chances in wining this close battle.
Jordan Harn would lead the Panthers’ defense with 13 tackles including 1 tackle-for-loss. Austin Trent also had a very impressive defensive effort with 11 tackles including 2 tackles-for-loss, one of those being a sack. Isaac Frye would record 9 tackles including 2 sacks. Levi Moran would record 10 tackles in the loss.
In total the Panthers’ defense would allow 137 rushing yards on 34 rushes, while allowing 122 passing yards on 19 pass attempts. In total the Raiders would run 54 offensive plays for 259 yards of total offense. Landon Yoak would prove to be a hero for the Raiders. Yoak would give the Raiders the early 7-0 lead with his 1st rushing TD of the game. The score would remain 7-0 entering the 4th quarter. That is when both offenses would find life. Trailing 7-0, the Panthers’ would put together two drives that seen Landon Johnson punch it in for his 2 rushing touchdowns that gave the Panthers’ the 15-7 advantage. With East Carter trailing in the 4th quarter 15-7, Ryland Pfau entered the stage with a huge 60-yard kickoff return for a TD. With the 2-point conversion being unsuccessful, the Raiders were trailing 15-13.
The Raiders would put together their final drive. Landon Yoak would score the go-ahead touchdown with just a little over 1 minute remaining. The Panthers would have about 1 minute to try to drive down and get the victory. However, it wasn’t meant to be. Yoak would grab a late interception that would seal the Raiders’ victory in the final seconds. Raiders QB, Quentin Johnson would finish the game with 120 passing yards. Landon Yoak would finish with 102 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
East Carter (5-2) will be back in action this coming Friday, Oct. 13th when they host Lewis County (2-5). With kickoff set for 7:30 p..m. Fleming County (4-3) will look to bounce back this coming Friday, Oct. 13th when they host West Carter (2-5). With kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
