Pirates Hold Off Bulldogs For 14-6 win

The Belfry Pirates scored two touchdowns in the first half and then held on as they defeated the Lawrence County Bulldogs, 14-6, on Friday at Belfry for a huge district win.

The Pirates (4-3) jumped on the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter with 0:18 left when Dre Young darted into the end zone from 21 yards out. Nick Savage’s PAT kick made the score, 7-0.

Belfry then added to its lead with 2:52 left until the half when quarterback Chase Varney connected with Caden Woolum for 47-yard touchdown pass. Savage’s kick increased the Pirates’ lead to 14-0.

The Bulldogs (4-2) scored their only touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Cody Crum scored on a run from 4 yards out to make the score 14-6. The Pirates held on from there to pick up the win.

Belfry quarterback Chase Varney completed 8-of-12 passes for 81 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. At one point when Varney appeared to have been injured, some of his teammates knelt down and prayed by his side (Pictured Above).

The Pirates racked up 218 yards rushing on the ground with Woolum leading the way with 69 yards on 5 carries. JJ Austin had 16 carries for 68 yards. Young finished with 63 yards and 1 touchdown on 8 carries. Ace Caudill finished with 14 yards on 4 carries.

For the Bulldogs, Talan Pollock completed 7-of-23 yards for 60 yards.

Crum had 18 carries for 42 yards and 1 touchdown. Will McDavid had 11 carries for 33 yards. Cavin Williams finished with 1 carry for 3 yards.

Belfry will have a bye week before travelling to Estill County on October 13.

Lawrence County returns home to face Magoffin County on Friday at 7:30 pm.
