East vs West, in this case it was East Carter vs West Carter, in the battle of Carter County. Both teams wanted to open district play with a win, and wanted to gain the bragging rights of Carter County. In a close game, the East Carter Raiders were able to overcome the West Carter Comets, 34-28.
East Carter would strike first on a 41-yard TD run by Landon Yoak. West Carter would even the score after a 5-yard TD run by Dwaylon Dean. With the game tied at 7-7, East Carter QB, Quentin Johnson would connect with Gabe Roberts on a 3rd and goal for a 6-yard TD pass to put East Carter back in front, 13-7. Jaxon Barker would come up with a timely interception for East Carter. That would lead to a Landon Yoak TD run with 4:34 remining in the 2nd quarter to extend the Raiders’ lead to 21-7.
West Carter would go back to work, Dwaylon Dean would score on a 17-yard TD run to pull the game back to 14-21, in favor of East Carter.
Ryland Pfau would return the kickoff for a TD to extend East Carter’s lead to 28-14. That would prove to be the score at halftime.
Dwaylon Dean would score on a 1-yard touchdown run that would cut into the East Carter lead with 3:56 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
With East Carter leading 28-21 in the 4th quarter, West Carter would run a tick play, and Isaiah Bond would connect with Kale Back for a 26-yard TD pass to tie the score at 28-28 with 7:02 remaining in the game.
That’s when Landon Yoak would go to work for East Carter. Yoak would help lead the Raiders down the field and would score on a 3 & goal from the 4 yard line to give East Carter the lead, 34-28 with 1:13 remaining in the game.
Hayden Hall would drop back on 1st and 10 and would throw a game-clinching interception to Jaxon Barker of East Carter. East Carter would run the clock out to win the game 34-28.
East Carter (3-2) returns to action against Bath County (1-4) this coming Friday, September 29th. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bath County.
West Carter (1-4) will play Russell (3-3) this coming Friday, September 29th. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at West Carter.
