In a true back-and-forth battle, the Morehead State Eagles come up short against the St. Thomas Tommies.
Neither team was able to find the scoreboard in the 1st quarter. The game remained scoreless through much of the 2nd quarter, until MSU QB, Carter Cravens was able to connect with Kyle Daly for a 24-yard TD pass with 1:04 to go in the 1st half. The Eagles would take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would see the teams combine for 35 points. St. Thomas would come out of halftime and score on a 61-yard Shawn Shipman run at the 12:46 mark of the 3rd quarter. Matthew Rink would then score for the Tommies on a blocked punt that he returned for a 2-yard TD score to give the Tommies their first lead at 14-7.
Carter Cravens would connect with Caleb Tillman for a 9-yard TD pass to even the score at 14-14. Shawn Shipman would break loose once again for St. Thomas and would run for a 71-yard TD, to help the Tommies regain the lead at 21-14. Morehead would even the score at 21-21 on a Caleb Ramseur 3-yard TD run.
With the score tied at 21-21, Tak Tateoka connected with Patrick Wagner for a 2-yard touchdown pass to give the Tommies a 28-21 lead. The Eagles would battle back and tie the score with 1:52 remaining in the 4th quarter when Caleb Ramseur got loose for a 16-yard TD run.
With less than 2 minutes, the Tommies would put together a drive that resulted in Tak Tateoka connecting with Jacob Wildermuth on a 26-yard TD pass with 9 seconds left on the clock. That would be the final score of the game, with the Tommies escaping with a 35-28 victory over the Eagles.
Morehead State was led by Carter Cravens who completed 20-44 passes for 295 yards and 2 TDs. Caleb Ramseur ran the ball 12 times for 74 yards and 2 TDs. Kyle Daly had 6 receptions for 107 yards and 1 TD.
St. Thomas was led by Shawn Shipman who had 16 carries for 204 yards and 2 TDs. QB, Tak Tateoka completed 10 of 16 passes for 137 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT. Andrew McElroy had 5 receptions for 92 yards.
Morehead State (1-2) returns to action this coming Saturday, September 30th when they host Drake (0-3). Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
