Morehead Falls To Mercer

The Morehead State Eagles were coming off their opening-season win over West Virginia Sate, and was looking to start the season 2-0. They would hit the road and travel to Macon, Georgia to take on the 20th ranked Mercer Bears. Mercer was standing at 1-1 after last week’s blowout loss at Mississippi. The Bears would be triumphant over the Eagles, 48-22, after a huge 4th quarter effort.

Mercer would strike first after a Carter Peevy 17-yard TD run. Morehead State would respond with a 39-yard FG from Hazlett to bring the score to 3-7. Mercer would strike again at the 2:52 mark in the 1st quarter with an Al Wooten II 30-yard TD run, to extend the Bears lead to 14-3. Morehead would get a second field goal at the 14:51 mark in the 2nd quarter to bring the score to 6-14. Morehead would strike again at the 10:21 mark in the 2ND quarter when Cravens would connect with Daly for a 24-yard TD pass, Morehead missed the 2-point conversion, but had pulled the score to 12-14. Hazlett would connect on a 22-yard field goal to put Morehead in the lead, 15-14 at the 2:18 mark in the 2nd. Mercer would find the endzone after an Al Wooten II 8-yard TD run to put the Bears in front at halftime 21-15.

Mercer would come out in the 3rd quarter and strike first on a 75-yd TD bomb to Ty James from Carter Peevy. Mercer failed on the 2-pt conversion and the score stood at 27-15. Mercer would add a 24-yd FG to push the lead to 30-15. Morehead would find the endzone after Cravens connected with Upp for a 13-yard TD pass to get the game back to within a score at 22-30.

Mercer would take full control in the 4th quarter by scoring 18 points to put the game away and record the 48-22 victory. Mercer, QB, Carter Peevy would finish the game completing 13 of 19 passes for 269 yards and 1 TD, and carried the ball 6 times for 10 yards and 1 TD. Devron Harper would rush for 72 yards. Al Wooten II carried the ball 7 times for 58 yards and 2 TDs. Tyrell Coard had 2 carries and 1 TD. Ty James had 5 receptions for 146 yards and 1 TD. Deveron Harper had 6 receptions for 100 yards.

Morehead State QB Carter Cravens would finish the game completing 14 of 26 passes for 187 yards and 2 TDs, while rushing 8 times for 27 yards. Caleb Ramseur carried the ball 7 times for 67 yards. Kyle Daly had 4 receptions for 63 yards and 1 TD. Ryan Upp finished with 3 receptions for 44 yards and 1 TD.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, September 23rd when they travel to square off against St. Thomas (1-1) for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
