The Huntington Highlanders jumped all over the Spring Valley Timberwolves early and never looked back as they raced to a 42-7 opening week win on Friday in Huntington.
The Highlanders (1-0) jumped on top early when Markel Jones blocked a punt that was picked up and returned 12 yards for a touchdown by Walt Williams with 9:48 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. With just 2:35 left in the opening quarter, Avonte Crawford connected with Wayne Harris on a 36-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead.
Huntington added its next touchdown early in the second quarter when D’Edrick Graves raced 78 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0. Graves then scored on a 4-yard run to make it 28-0 at the half.
In the third period, Crawford and Harris connected again, this time from 5 yards out for a 35-0 lead with 3:00 left.
Spring Valley (0-1) finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Cam Perdue scored on a 2-yard run to make it 35-7.
Huntington’s final score then came on a 1-yard run from Jaxon Hatfield.
For Huntington, Crawford led in passing by completing 7-of-12 for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns. Graves had 107 yards and 2 touchdowns on 6 carries. Harris had 4 catches for 61 yards and 2 touchdowns.
For the Timberwolves, Jamison Smith was 7-of-11 for 41 yards. Perdue had 46 yards and 1 touchdown on 9 carries. Jalyn Abercrombie had 4 catches for 37 yards.
Spring Valley will host Cabell Midland on Friday at 7:30 pm.
Huntington will travel to South Charleston on Friday at 7:30 pm.
