The Letcher County Central Cougars picked up a huge road win to start the season as they downed the Shelby Valley Wildcats, 36-28, on Friday.
Gunner Holbrook completed 5-of-9 passes for 60 yards and 1 touchdown.
Isaac Matthews led all rushers with 156 yards and 2 touchdowns on 15 carries. Garrett Howard had 21 yards and 1 touchdown on 4 rushing attempts. Peyton Combs had 4 carries for 20 yards. Brett Smith and Quinton Williams each had 1 carry for 13 yards. Koby Johnson finished with 5 yards on 3 carries.
Smith led Cougar receivers with 2 catches for 37 yards and 1 touchdown. Johnson had 1 reception for 12 yards. Matthews caught 1 pass for 7 yards. Gavin Brown had 1 catch for 4 yards.
Defensively, Williams was a monster, garnering 16 tackles, including 1 for a loss and a sack. Howard had 13 tackles. Smith had 10 tackles and picked off a pass that he returned for a touchdown.
For Shelby Valley, Russ Osborne completed 20-of-27 passes for 237 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He also rushed for 50 yards and 1 touchdown on 13 carries.
Brady Bentley led the Wildcats with 126 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13 rushing attempts. John Luke Fields had 4 carries for 27 yards. Jakob Childers recorded 2 rushing attempts for 5 yards.
Bentley led all receivers with 6 catches for 76 yards. Kolton Stamper had 3 catches for 56 yards and 1 touchdown. Jesse Cook hauled in 4 passes for 53 yards. Fields recorded 52 yards on 7 catches.
The Cougars will host Raceland on Friday at 8 pm.
Shelby Valley will travel to Lawrence County on Friday for a game starting at 7:30 pm.
