The Pike County Central Hawks picked up a 20-10 win at home over the West Carter Comets on Friday to open the 2023 season.
Freshman Jamere Knuckles led the Hawk offense. He completed 5-of-10 passes for 31 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 15 carries for 96 yards.
Cameron Flannery followed on the ground with 70 yards and 1 touchdown on 15 carries. Daymon Scammell had 6 carries for 20 yards.
CJ Cox led Hawk receivers with 1 reception for 14 yards. Mason Hess had 2 catches for 13 yards and 1 touchdown. Lane Adams finished with 2 catches for 4 yards.
Steven Gonzalex was great in the kicking game. He connected on 2 field goals and also added two extra points.
Defensively, Jayson Chapman had 10 tackles, including 5 for a loss and 4 sacks. Malachi Anderson had 10 tackles, including 1 fumble recovery. Tyler Thompson added 6 tackles, including 3 for a loss and 3 sacks.
For West Carter, Hayden Hill was 10-of-23 for 115 yards passing.
Dwaylon Dean finished with 6 carries for 20 yards. Kadin Thompson had 5 carries for 6 yards.
Kale Back led all receivers with 5 catches for 79 yards. Jacob Waddell had 1 reception for 16 yards. Thompson added 2 catches for 12 yards. Logan Birds hauled in 2 catches for 8 yards.
The Hawks will next play Martin County in the Pike County Bowl on Friday at Belfry. The opening kick is set for 6 pm.
West Carter will have a bye week before hosting Estill County on September 1 at 7:30 pm.
