Pigskin Preview: Pike County Central Hawks

The Pike County Central Hawks took a lot of lumps last season. Still, even with a 3-7 record, the Hawks showed a lot of growth during the season.

“We improved each week, which was a goal of ours, even though our record wasn’t very strong,” stated Pike County Central head coach Ronn Varney. “Our young guys gained valuable experience playing against some really good competition.”

KEY LOSSES: Zack Brooks, Izaac Blankenship and Matt Anderson

KEY RETURNERS: Daymon Scammell, Mason Hess, Ethan Adkins and Lane Adams

The Hawks will come into the season with freshman Jamere Knuckles at quarterback.

He’ll be joined in the backfield by running backs Cameron Flannery and Daymon Scammell. Some newer players may be asked to carry some of the load as well.

At wide receiver, the Hawks will see Mason Hess, Scott Williams, Lane Adams and a couple of new faces.

The defensive line will be led by Ethan Adkins, Max Bailey and Jayson Chapman.

At linebacker, Malachi Anderson, Scammell, Flannery and Trevor Holbrook will handle the duties.

Lukas Varney, Cole Humphries, Lane Adams, Mason Hess as well as a few freshmen will get opportunities in the defensive backfield.

Adams will return kicks this season. He’s solid in the role and could produce some big returns.

Varney is excited by his team’s schedule and feels like his squad will have a lot of community support.

“We are excited about being in a district that has so many local team,” stated Varney. “Many of our guys got valuable experience playing a tough varsity schedule and full JV schedule last year. We hope to be able to compete and take the next step in building a program that excites our school and community. Our schedule has some quality teams coming in for our home games as well as more local games that our fans will be able to come and support.”
