Pigskin Preview: Martin County Cardinals

Last season, the Martin County Cardinals went 6-4 in the regular season before heading into the playoffs and picking up their first playoff win since 2010. This season, the Cardinals are hoping to take the next step.

“Last season was our highest finish in the district since 2010,” said Martin County head coach Josh Muncy. “We lost a second round playoff match up to Breathitt County in a game that we led at halftime. I think it left a hunger in our guys, because they know that last season we were well within reach of finishing much better than we did. Our guys now know that we are capable of winning a district championship and making a deep playoff run. The dedication they have had in the weight room this offseason has been incredible.”

KEY LOSSES: Caleb Costa, Greydon Proctor, Dawson Mills, Jaquan Rufus

KEY RETURNERS: Madden Miller, Brock Messer, Bryston Wells, Tate Crum, Noah Mollett

OFFENSE

At quarterback, Weston Jude returns after putting in a lot of work in the weight room and on the wrestling mat. He should be bigger and stronger this season.

In the backfield, Brock Messer returns for his senior season after rushing for 1,532 yards and 19 touchdowns. Madden Miller, who is a strong and tough runner, also returns after rushing for 791 yards and 14 touchdowns. This should give the Cardinals a great 1-2 punch in the run game.

Tate Crum leads a big and athletic offensive line that returns 4-of-5 starters. Joining Crum is Bryston Wells, Noah Mollett and Cory Parsley

Offensive Line- Returning 4 of 5 starters. Tate Crum, Bryston Wells, Noah Mollett and Cory Parsely. These guys are quiet possibly the biggest and most athletic offensive line we have had in decades.

DEFENSE

On defense, Damien Cheek will move from safety to handle the linebacker spot, replacing the departed Caleb Costa. Cheek, a smart and intense player, has worked hard to get stronger in the offseason. Miller will join him in the linebacker unit on the defensive side of the ball. Miller has a nose for the ball and a knack for making big plays.

Wells will be an edge rusher for the team. With his size and athleticism, opposing offenses will have a difficult time keeping him out of the backfield.

Julian Stafford will play at cornerback. Stafford is disciplined in his coverage and tackles well on the edge. Last season, he had a huge Pick-6 in a close win against Prestonsburg.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Max Johnson will return at place kicker this season. Last year, Johnson was very reliable on point after tries.

SCHEDULE

Muncy said that his team is excited for their upcoming schedule and to prove themselves, especially in district games.

“We are excited to get into district play,” stated Muncy. “We feel like we let a district championship slip away last season and our guys are hungry to go after one this season. We feel like our out of district games are tough and should prepare us for postseason play. We want to be battle tested come November. Our guys are excited to be a part of the Pike County Bowl this season and ready to take a step up in competition.”

OUTLOOK
