Pigskin Preview: Westside Renegades

Last season, the Westside Renegades had a few bright spots but struggled most games, finishing with a 3-7 record. This season, the Renegades are looking to take a big step and compete for a playoff spot.

“We expect to be in contention for the playoffs this season,” said Westside head coach Justin Cogar. “After last year, we feel like we set the foundation for the program and had a great offseason to prepare for this year.”

OFFENSE

Junior Kadien Vance will once again lead the Renegade offense as the starting quarterback. Last season, Vance completed 61-of-120 passes for 660 yards, 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He also rushed for 274 yards and 5 touchdowns. This could be a breakout season for Vance.

“With a year of experience under his belt, we will look for him to lead us offensively,” noted Cogar.

DEFENSE

Ashton Reed should anchor the defensive line at defensive end. Dakota Martin and Kameron York should help anchor the linebackers. Parker Lambert will provide leadership at the safety position for Westside this season.

SCHEDULE

The Renegades feature a schedule with some strong opponents such as Mingo Central, Man and defending Class AA state champions Independence.

8/25 – @ Wyoming East

9/01 – @ Mingo Central

9/08 – Man

9/15 – @ Pikeview

OUTLOOK

The Renegades showed some progress last year and put together a few strong performances. With Vance returning under center, look for Westside to be stronger and possibly pick up a spot in the Class AA playoffs at season’s end.
