Johnson Central Knocks Off Highlands In Opening Round Of State Softball Tournament

The Johnson Central Lady Golden Eagles defeated 9th Region champion Highlands, 3-1, on Thursday in the opening game of the 2023 Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Softball State Tournament presented by UK HealthCare at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington.

The Lady Eagles began the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Lacey Smith scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead. Keylee Blair then scored later in the inning to make it 2-0.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the 5th inning when Mayson Delong scored on a bases loaded walk to give Johnson Central a 3-0 lead.

Highlands scored its only run in the top of the 6th inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Golden Eagles moved on to the quarter finals to face Rowan County on Saturday at 2 pm.

In the pitcher’s circle Madelyn Vaughn got the win after allowing on 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 3 batters over 7 innings.
