The top seed Chapmanville Tigers scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to defeat the 4th seed Wayne Pioneers, 9-5, in the sectional tournament in Chapmanville.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when Fisher Fry singled to left field. Levi Cassidy and Logan Prater scored on the play to give Wayne a 2-0 lead. Chapmanville battled back in the bottom of the 1st inning when Trey Butcher singled home Talan Thompson. Andrew Farley then stepped up and doubled to right field, scoring Butcher to knot the score up at 2-2.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning. First, Braylon Moore scored on a wild pitch. Then, Eli Surgoine scored on a fielder’s choice to make it a 4-2 game.
Wayne took the lead in the top of the 4th inning by scoring 3 runs. First, the Pioneers got two runs on an error. Then, Brayden Jackson singled to left field, bringing Cassidy home for a 5-4 advantage. The Tigers tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the 4th inning when Thompson doubled to left field to score Eli Messer.
Chapmanville took the lead for good in the bottom of the 6th inning with a 4 run outburst. First, Jacob Topping scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead. Then, Brody Dalton tripled to right field, scoring Thompson and Luke Knight. Butcher then stepped up and brought Dalton home on a double to center field for a 9-5 lead, which proved to be the final margin of victory.
Moore allowed no hits over 3-1/3 innings and struck out 1 batter to get the win on the mound. Riley Brown was given the loss for Wayne.
Chapmanville will next host Logan on Thursday in the sectional tournament. Wayne will play the winner of Scott vs Mingo Central on Thursday.
