The Scott Skyhawks scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to overcome an early deficit and beat the Wayne Pioneers, 8-5, on Saturday.
The Pioneers jumped out front in the top of the 1st inning. Austin Porter singled to left field, scoring Logan Prater for the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Levi Queen scored on a bases loaded walk. Another bases loaded walk scored Porter. Eli Steele then singled to left field to bring home Brady Dyer for a 4-0 advantage.
Scott got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Hunter Null scored on a fielder’s choice to make it a 4-1 game. The Skyhawks got a little closer in the bottom of the 3rd inning when a fielder’s choice brought home Carter McClung to cut Wayne’s lead to 4-2.
The Skyhawks then exploded in the bottom of the 5th inning. Nick Miller doubled to right field, scoring McClung. Then, Ryan Neal scored on an error to tie the score at 4-4. Null and Griffin Miller than scored on an error to give Scott the lead at 6-4. Kedron Elkins then scored on a Sam Cook infield single to make it a 7-4 score. In the bottom of the 6th inning, McClung scored on a sacrifice play to make it an 8-4 Scott lead.
Wayne scored its final run in the top of the 7th when Queen scored on a fielder’s choice.
Hayden Johnson got the win, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits while striking out 7 batters in the complete game win. Riley Brown was given the loss for Wayne.
Scott will next play Chapmanville on Monday. Wayne will take on Winfield on Tuesday.
