Lawrence County Beats Belfry In Extra Innings, 9-6

The Lawrence County Bulldogs scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning to earn a dramatic extra inning win over the Belfry Pirates in the 2A Sectional Tournament on Tuesday.

Belfry jumped on top early with 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Lawrence County then tied it up at 5-5 with in the top of the 5th inning with 5 runs of its own. The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning to make it 6-5. Lawrence County then tied the game up at 6-6 with a run in the top of the 7th inning to set up the 9th inning heroics.

Will Lafferty scored on a single to center field from Eli Fletcher to make it a 7-6 game. Brayden Maynard then scored on a fielder’s choice to make the score 8-6. Fletcher scored the last run of the game on a passed ball.

The Bulldogs were led by Lafferty’s 2-of-4 effort with a double, triple, stolen base and 2 runs scored. Maynard was 2-of-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Fletcher was 2-of-4 with 1 RBI and 3 runs. Abner Collinsworth was 2-of-5 with 3 RBI. Jake Derifield and Cody Crum also had hits.

Lafferty got the win on the mound, allowing no earned runs on 2 hits while striking out 7 batters in 5 innings.

Noah Brown led the Pirates by batting 2-of-5 with a grand slam, 4 RBI and 1 run scored. Steven Banks wad 2-of-5 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Jonathan Banks was 2-of-3 with 2 runs scored. Jake Varney, Devin Jude and Chase Varney all had hits in defeat.

Lawrence County plays Letcher County Central on Thursday in the 2A Sectional Tournament.
