Belfry Throttles Phelps in 60th District Tournament

The Belfry Pirates picked up a win in the opening round of the 60th District tournament by defeating the Phelps Hornets, 77-50, on Monday at Belfry High School.

The Pirates (9-22) were firing on all cylinders early, taking a 20-6 after the first quarter. The advantage grew to 47-16 at the half. Phelps (6-21) shaved off a few points in the second half, but Belfry was able to cruise to the win.

Belfry was led by Eric Daniels with 18 points. Noah Brown followed with 17 points. Cody Erwin added 13 points. Caden Woolum fired in 7 points. Jonathan Banks netted 5 points. David Hagy dropped in 4 points. Keaton Deskins, Kaleb Hensley and Andrew Rhodes scored 3 points each. Davey Hall and Cayden Varney chipped in 2 points apiece.

Mason Prater paced Phelps with 31 points. Melvin McCoy fired in 9 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Gavin Hamilton scored 3 points. Hayden Mounts, Mikey Flemings and Owen Sullivan added 2 points each. Corey Turnmire chipped in 1 point.

Belfry will move on to play Pike County Central in the 60th District Championship on Thursday at Belfry High School.
