Williams Scores 38 As Martin County Rolls Past West Carter, 70-55

The Martin County Lady Cardinals got 38 points from Laken Williams as they defeated the West Carter Lady Comets, 70-55, on Monday in Martin County.

The Lady Comets (5-22) got off to a blazing start to take a 20-14 lead after the first period of play. Martin County (21-4) battle back in the second quarter to take a slim 33-32 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Lady Cardinals’ lead grew to 49-43 after three quarters of play. Martin County outscored West Carter, 21-12, over the final period to earn the win.

Katie Marcum followed Williams with 18 points. Alyssa Allen had 5 points. Brooklyn Marcum netted 4 points. Sophie Harless added 3 points. Kennadi Mollett chipped in 2 points.

For West Carter, Camryn Burton and Amelia Henderson led the way with 16 points each. Kaylee Kinney added 11 points. Makenna Nichols fired in 6 points. Emilee Barker, Sydney Cecil and Jaci Cooley chipped in 2 points each.

In addition to this victory, Martin County head coach Robin Newsome was able to celebrate her 500th career victory last week.

The Lady Cardinals will next play on Wednesday when they visit Elliott County for 7:30 pm clash. West Carter will travel to Tolsia on Wednesday at 7:30 pm as well.
