The Martin County Lady Cardinals clinched the top seed in the 57th District tournament with a victory over visiting Johnson Central, 47-39, on Wednesday.
The Lady Cardinals (20-4) jumped out on top 7-3 after a low scoring first quarter. Johnson Central (18-6) slightly cut into the lead and trailed, 12-10, at the half. The pace picked up in the third period as Martin County increased its lead to 30-21 heading into the final quarter. From there, the Lady Cardinals were able to hold on for the win.
Laken Williams led Martin County with 23 points. Katie Marcum added 6 points. Kennadi Mollett fired in 5 points. Brooke Marcum, Candace Spaulding and Sophie Harless scored 3 points each. Alyssa Allen chipped in 2 points.
Johnson Central was paced by Taylor McKenzie’s 11 points. Becca Wright followed with 8 points. Kaylyn McKenzie had 7 points. Adyson Burchett netted 5 points. Abbie Stambaugh dropped in 4 points. Haylee Marsillett chipped in 3 points. Sophie Younce finished with 1 point.
Martin County will next play West Carter at home on Monday at 7:30 pm. Johnson Central will host Pike County Central on Monday, also at 7:30 pm.
