The Belfry Pirates built up a large lead and then held on late to defeat the Mingo Central Miners, 60-54, on Saturday in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at the Williamson Field House.
The Pirates (6-17) took a 15-11 lead after the first quarter and then 29-24 lead at the half. Belfry continued to extend its advantage, outscoring Mingo Central (6-11), 14-6, in the third period to hold a 43-30 advantage. The Miners closed the gap in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Pirates took home the win.
Belfry was paced by Noah Brown’s 18 points. Cody Erwin followed with 16 points. Aidan Burke added 8 points. Cayden Varney netted 7 points. Michael Hagy and Eric Daniels dropped in 4 points each. Caden Woolum chipped in 3 points.
For Mingo Central, Ethan Thomason led the way with 18 points. Jake Cline followed with 11 points. Kendan Trent netted 9 points. Chris Ross had 6 points. Caden Porter dropped in 5 points. Tyler Lester added 3 points. Malaki Sheppard chipped in 2 points.
Belfry will next play on Tuesday in a home match up with Johnson Central at 7:30 pm. Mingo Central will play at Tug Valley on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
