Lady Eagles Leave Floyd Central with Victory

Last night, the Johnson Central Lady Golden Eagles traveled to Floyd Central High School in a battle of two of the top teams in the 15th Region. The matchup was a rematch of a game earlier this season that saw the Lady Jags go into Paintsville with a overtime victory 40-36. Johnson Central came in with revenge on their mind and trying to return the favor.

Johnson Central jumped out to a quick lead 12-8 at the end of the 1st quarter. The four point Lady Eagle lead held steady until the 3rd quarter until the Golden Eagles pushed the lead out to 10 by outscoring the Lady Jags 18-12. The finally quarter was high scoring as both teams put up 19 points but in the end Johnson Central would be victorious 61-51.

The Lady Golden Eagles offense was clicking. They shot 55.6% from inside the arch (10/18) and 41.2% behind the 3 point line (7-17). The big difference in the game was from the free throw line as Johnson Central was 20-21 for 95.2%.

Johnson Central was led in scoring by Kaylyn McKenzie with 17 points on 5/10 shooting from the field. In her first game back from injury, Taylor McKenzie had a great game adding 13 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Sophie Younce chipped in 10 for the third Lady Eagle in double figures.

Floyd Central was led in scoring by Kennedy Harvel. Harvel scored 22 points while shooting 46% from the floor and 8/8 from the foul line. Seniors Madi Meade and Jada Johnson both scored in double figures. Meade added 13 while Johnson scored 10.

The victory pushes Johnson Central to 17-5 on the season and 10-2 in region play. Next up for the Lady Eagles, they will play host to the Paintsville Lady Tigers in a huge 57th district matchup on Friday 2/3. The loss drops the Lady Jags to 13-9 on the season and 7-5 in regional play. The Lady Jags will travel to Prestonsburg Friday night to take on the Lady Blackcats.
