Smith’s Dagger Lifts Lady Miners To Win Over Top Ranked Wyoming East, 37-36

When Addie Smith set up for the inbound pass with 9.4 seconds left, the second-ranked Mingo Central Lady Miners needed a huge play, trailing top-raked Wyoming East, 36-34.

Smith threw the pass to Bella Hall who dribbled toward the right side of the floor. Smith cut through traffic and flashed open just long enough for Hall to get her the ball. Smith caught the pass and dribbled to her right toward the corner. She fired a fade away 3-point shot over the outstretched arm of Wyoming East’s Maddie Clark. The shot was perfect as it sailed through the net with 0.4 seconds left in the game, giving the Lady Miners a 37-36 win over Wyoming East.

The shot capped off a furious final 29.6 seconds that saw Smith score 5 straight points to cap off a huge win on Miner Mountain. The win also avenged Mingo Central’s only loss this season, a 57-40 defeat at Wyoming East. The Lady Miners will have a very good shot at being the new top-ranked team in AA when the newest poll is released.

The two squads battled tightly throughout the defensive contest. They were knotted up, 9-9, after the opening period, and Mingo Central (9-1) held a 13-12 lead at the half. Wyoming East (8-2) squeaked ahead 25-23 after three periods before the Lady Miners pulled the game out in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

Smith led Mingo Central with 18 points. Alyssa Davis followed with 6 points. Hall added 5 points. Jenna Sparks recorded 4 points and 8 rebounds. DaLaney Grimmett and Madisyn Curry each chipped in 2 points. Curry also had 8 boards.

Cadee Blackburn paced Wyoming East with 9 points. Clark and Abby Russell each scored 8 points in the loss.

Mingo Central will next play Liberty-Raleigh at home on Friday. The opening tip is set for 7:30 pm.
