Less than a week after winning the 2A Sectional Championship at Floyd Central High School, the Magoffin County Hornets traveled back to Floyd Central to take on the Jaguars in a big 15th District matchup. The Jaguars handed the Hornets the loss 76-61.
The Jaguars placed 4 players in double figures led by Junior guard Dawson Moore. D. Moore was 8-12 from the field including 2-4 from behind the three point line for a total of 19 points. D. Moore was followed closely in scoring by the “Microwave” Ronnie Sammons. Sammons added 18 points and 9 rebounds. Braden Moore was the third Jaguar in double figures. B. Moore had 12 points and 6 assists. The final Jag in double figures was Eric Burke scoring 10 points. Other Jaguars scoring were Dylan Boyd with 7, Chris Spriggs chipped in with 6 and Brody Buck added 4 points.
For Magoffin County Zane Whitaker has been playing at an amazing level over the past month and last night was no different. Whitaker led the Hornets in scoring with 17 points. Aden Barnett chipped in with 14 points while “Big Ben” Lafferty added 12 in the loss. Others scoring for the Hornets were Walker Russell with 7 points, Ethan Salyers 6 points, Grayson Whitaker 3 points and Reed Meadows added 2 points.
The win pushed the Jaguar record to 10-5 on the season. Next up for the Jaguars, they will be at home to take on 58th District rival on Friday. As for the Hornets, the loss drops them to 8-6 on the season. The hornets will travel to West Carter on Saturday to take on the Comets.
