Friday promised to be a showdown between the two top teams in AAA. Instead, the Wayne Lady Pioneers turned it into a massacre. The top-ranked Lady Pioneers throttled the second-ranked Ripley Vikings, 60-27.
Wayne (10-0) jumped out of the gate quickly, forcing multiple steals and building an 18-5 advantage after the first period. Things didn’t get better for the Vikings (8-2) in the second quarter. Wayne upped the advantage to 33-11 at the intermission. The lead ballooned to over 30 points heading into the fourth quarter at 51-20. Wayne coasted from there to make a statement to the rest of the state.
Wayne’s defense gave the Vikings fits by recording 23 steals. The Lady Pioneers also owned the boards, including a whopping 23 offensive rebounds.
Brooke Adkins led Wayne with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 8 steals. Laneigh Brooks followed with 15 points and 9 rebounds, including 8 offensive rebounds. Addie Adkins recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mikayla Stacy also registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Shelby Anderson finished with 3 points. Eve Brown chipped in 2 points in the win.
Sophia Nichols paced Ripley with 12 points. Erin Ryan added 7 points. Maddi Vance dropped in 4 points. Morgan Shanklin and McKennan Hall scored 2 points each.
Wayne will look to flex its muscle again on Tuesday when in a 7 pm clash at Lincoln County.
