BREAKING NEWS: Historic Mountain Basketball Tournament Set To Change Format In 2023

Belfry’s Mountain Schoolboy Classic is going back to a tournament format for the first time since 2003.

Pirate head coach Michael Hagy and assistant coach Logan Copley are hoping to have a team from each of the four districts in the 15th Region as well as four teams from outside of the area. The Mountain Schoolboy Classic is one of the premiere basketball events in the area along with the WYMT Mountain Classic, the Pikeville Invitational Tournament and the Hatfield -McCoy Shootout.

Next season’s Mountain Schoolboy Classic will be the 49th edition of the event. The last time a tournament format was used was in 2003. Betsy Layne won the championship game of the tournament that year by defeating Belfry, 73-57. Next season’s tournament is set to run from December 28-30, 2023.

Teams interested in participating in the tournament may contact Copley via e-mail at logan.copley@pike.kyschools.us for more information.
