Rylee Samons set a school record with 11 3-point field goals as Pikeville throttled Teays Valley Christian, 78-30, on Tuesday in the opening round in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament.
Samons hit seven of his trifectas in the opening quarter and nine total in the first half. He finished with 35 points in the contest. The previous team record was set by Will Branham in 2011 when he blistered the nets for 10 3-point field goals in a game against Paris.
Pikeville (3-2) held a 28-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 50-15 lead at the intermission. The Panthers cruised from there, connecting on 17 3-pointers as a team.
Following Samons with Heath Jarrell with 9 points. Eli Johnson and Charlie Fitzer had 6 points apiece. Mason Wells dropped in 5 points. Josh Hughes recorded 4 points. Kade Belcher, Braden Bolding and Cole Slone each finished with 3 points. Will Rowe and Jacob Rogers each chipped in 2 points in the win.
The Panthers will play Perry County Central in the second round of the Pikeville Invitational Tournament on Wednesday. The opening tip is set for 7 pm.
